Find a breastfeeding support volunteer

Who are our breastfeeding peer-support volunteers?

More than 300 experienced and trained volunteers offer peer-support with Nourri-Source Montreal to mentor, encourage and equip mothers and their families.

  • They are volunteer mothers who are breastfeeding or have breastfed in the past;
  • They have received breastfeeding and counselling training from Nourri-Source Montreal;
  • They participate in ongoing training on breastfeeding;
  • A significant number of our mentors have the ability to communicate in a language other than French or English (German, Arabic, Cantonese Chinese, Creole, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Vietnamese, etc.).

What services do they offer?

Telephone assistance

Most of the support provided by the breastfeeding mentors is done by telephone. This allows for:

  • a listening ear that is tailored to your needs, for as long as you want it;
  • continuous support by phone before the birth and until weaning, which is adapted to your schedule and determined with your lactation consultant;
  • answers to your questions and encouragement when needed.

In-person support

Godmothers cannot offer personalized support at home. We will be delighted to welcome you to one of our Nourri-Source Montreal drop-ins to offer you support in person. You will be able to talk with the breastfeeding team on site.

When to complete a matching request?

During the prenatal period

To help us promote the quality of our matching service with a breastfeeding support volunteer and a reduction in the waiting time for a match, please complete your matching request no earlier than 4 to 6 weeks before your expected delivery date. Otherwise, your request may be canceled; you would then be notified.

If you have a medical condition or a pregnancy specificity that would require early support (e.g.: twin pregnancy, risk of prematurity), contact us at jumelages@nourrisourcemontreal.org to tell us about your matching needs.

In the months leading up to the birth of your child, we encourage you to begin your preparation for breastfeeding using the following resources:

Prenatal breastfeeding workshop

Free 2-hour prenatal videoconference workshop intended for families planning to breastfeed or wanting to know more on the subject. It will allow you to have solid foundations to initiate your breastfeeding.

Information center on breastfeeding
